Coppers and Golds and Corals! Oh my! Fall is coming early this year, as women are going a bit darker. A surge of requests for richer colors, low lights, and something more natural has washed up. Twilight star, Ashley Greene had a head start in Fendi at the Skateland Premire in May. Her bold deep tones, aka 5G (you know what I mean) brings out an exotic glow. I love how she pairs it with a coral pink that is surprisingly bright but soft. Try Essie's Canyon Coral! It reminds me of a sweet sunset!

The hottest trend in hair right now is tie dye hair thanks to one of my fav's Lauren Conrad and her stylist, Kristen Ess.

It is so fun to forget the rules and play with hair, sometimes. Keeping in mind - color is color and can most always be altered (as LC showed us days later, I'm still not convinced they weren't extensions) Which brings me to my next point, playing with lenth. Cutting can always be tricky and you should really trust your stylist before you do a major change. This trend is bound to catch on because the color can be removed with a color remover, or just snip it off if you've got hair to spare!

A Much-Needed Pamper Day

Its safe to say that life in the last 6 months has been really hectic. Moving back and getting settled has proven to be challenging. After much searching, I finally found a great salon that I can call home, Trini in Private in Brickell. I've been there for 7 weeks and have been growing quickly with the company. Now that things are falling into place, and I finally had a day to myself, I decided to treat myself to a pamper day.

I started with a facial with Annabell... I wanted to get rid of the puffiness in my eyes and I knew I was due for some extractions, since my last facial was about 4 years ago. I learned that my quick trick of removing makeup with baby oil was contributing to the puffiness and that its time to invest in some better skin care products. Annabell prescribed Germaine de Capuccini's So Delicate line for sensitive skin. After my lesson, I relaxed with a soothing serum and listened to the sounds of nature.

Next I was overly-due for a haircut. I gave hairstylist Lin the go ahead to cut what was necessary, bracing myself for the loss of length. The Consultation

Everyone comes to the hairdresser with different expectations. Some clients are confident in what they want and how they see themselves, and this must be respected for trust to be established. Many people go to the salon wanting a new look or advice for what is best for their hair/coloring/ face. Its very exciting when I get to do something new, but before I can make any changes, there are some things that I need to know.

The Cut
The first thing I do when considering a new haircut is pull the hair completely away from the face. Be realistic and get to know the shape of the face, the widest and most narrow points and if there are any sharp features that you or she wants to downplay, or enhance for that matter.

Color
The most important things to remember when talking to your client about color is their skin tone, natural color, budget and lifestyle. High maintenance color will make you look bad if the client does not keep it up. Subtle highlights can be make drastic changes to someone's appearance and knowing how to inspire your clients out of their comfort zone can also bring big rewards. Being considerate of what their needs are will make your clients appreciate you for years to come.

Next, examine the condition of the hair and what maintenance needs to be done. Major color changes would not be best for someone who wants to keep their hair long or already has years or color in her hair. Although, going darker or back to a natural color is a great way to give stressed tresses a break. Can conditioning treatments repair the dry ends or should you cut and start fresh? Educate her on her options and make a plan for her to use at home. Don't be afraid to speak up if you think that a cut would not flatter her face shape or the bright red isn't hot for her skin tone. She will be grateful you helped her avoid a beauty disaster!

Skin and the Sun

I moved back to Miami four months ago, but it feels like I'm just starting to get settled into a routine. It's been 3 years since I was here, and since leaving my skin has experienced all kinds of environments and weather patterns. Now coming back, I'm noticing even more how the sun has changed my skin care patterns.

When I lived in Amsterdam, I was a big fan of using foundation to protect my skin from the cold wind but now its the hot sun I have to hide from! My new favorite product? mark. for goodness face. It's been a while since I've updated. I have been so busy getting settled back in Miami, back to where it all began, to where I started hair and makeup and my first inspirations were born. Now I have so much more appreciation for the palm trees, the good weather and the graffiti in downtown. I can't wait to start planning photo shoots and cutting hair! After a year and a half in cold rainy Holland, and nearly two months of snowy New York which included being stuck on the expressway for hours and hours due to a snow storm in Buffalo but its okay because we got engaged that night, I am ready for some drinks on the beach with old friends! I am so excited for the year ahead and what 2011 has in store!

I have been interviewing with several different salons, trying to find the right fit. I have to say, I have been spoiled by the Dutch. I know I will never find another team like Rob Peetoom Amsterdam and I would love to bring them all over here and have Rob Peetoom Miami, but thats just a dream...My standards are high, I want a nice working environment, with education and free parking. I tried South Beach but I couldn't justify the traffic, the parking and the attitudes. Hopefully I will find a European style salon who is looking for some talent...

This year, I'll also be working with Examiner.com to bring exposure to makeup trends, local deals and great locations in South Florida. Titled Makeup In Miami, I'll be looking for the hottest trends and where to go for makeup advice. Of course the first person I will send you to is me, or I can come to you...

As always, I'll be looking for models, photographers, videographers and stylist to collaborate with. I have some cool projects in mind and I'm networking with people to make it happen. Tips: Cowlicks, Crowns, Swirls

Whatever you call them cowlicks can be challenging. It is that point in your hair where your hair's growth direction changes, or swirls... You can cut down some frustration with a good haircut!

If your hair is full of cowlicks, and you want it to sit Lucy Liu straight, keep your layers long (so it's heavier) and know that you are committing yourself to ironing and hair products.
Going with lose waves can work with your natural hair pattern and enhance your overall image, plus its so much better for your hair.

If you have short hair, keep layers a little longer on top, where your cowlicks are.

Listen up guys and really funky girls Go with the patter of your hair with lots of layers (thick hair) and chunky textures (fine hair) for low maintenance!

Since moving back to the states, my latest guilty pleasure is the Dr. Oz talk show. His logical advice on all kinds of health concerns is inspiring and realistic. Yesterday, his show featured 5 foods that improve your beauty from the inside out. We spend over 2.5 billion dollars on creams and cosmetics but the answer is right there in your fridge.

Protect your skin from sun damage with half of a pink grapefruit per week! Pink grapefruit gets its color from a chemical called lycopene. Packed with antioxidants, this grapefruit helps to prevent the chemical reaction that occurs from free radicals. This keeps your skin healthy to produce new cells and as a result, a fresh face.

Tired of wrinkles? How much have you spent on anti-wrinkle creams, ointments and potions only to be disappointed time and again? The answer? Red peppers. A natural botox, red peppers are rich in vitamin C, which helps to build collagen. Collagen keeps our skin cells connected which is necessary for a smooth surface. One red pepper has twice the amount of vitamin C as an orange and 1/3 of the calories! Recommended daily minimum is a 1/4 cup daily.

Acne is a phenomenon that affects both teens and adults. Having been a victim of it myself as a teenager, I can attest to the embarrassment this skin condition brings. Of course you always hear, stay away from chocolate, sodas and greasy foods. But these are all myths right? What you put into your body, is what you will get out of it. Dr. Oz suggests collard greens is the best skin remedy for acne. It is rich in Vitamin A, which aids in the regulation of the sebaceous glands. Think you can't get your teens to eat collards? Try this tasty recipe which includes the recommended minimum (1/2 cup cooked per week).

Dry skin is something that we all have had to experience at some point in our life, whether from dehydration, winter or aging. Besides doubling up on the moisturizer, trout is a great way to hydrate from within. Recommended minimum: 1-2 fillets a week.

We all want even glowing skin but with today's stress and sun exposure, redness and inflammation is part of our lives. Just the simple action of adding capers to our salads twice a week, can reduce our redness. Capers contain a flavenol called quercetin, which is a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory. How to Cover Up a Tattoo with Makeup

Tattoos can be a great (and permanent) way to express yourself, remember a loved one or just to show your rebellious side...but they can also be somewhat embarrassing at a classy event like a wedding or hinder your chances at a job interview. You can buy expensive kits that advertise perfection, but might not work. To cover it up using makeup you have at home, you will need:

A medium nylon brush and a small nylon brush
a large blush or bronzer brush
any red base lip product, I suggest lipstic. Red will counter the greenish black ink that most tattoos are done with.
Matte translucent powder
2 concealers, one warm tone and one cool tone

Start with clean skin. Apply several thin layers of the red lip product, using your medium nylon brush, allowing it to dry completely between layers.

Once it has dried, apply your cooler concealer in a thin layer, using your small nylon brush, completely covering the red product. Allow that to dry completely.

Next apply the warm toned concealer. This concealer should match your skin tone exactly and should blend any edges into your skin, so that there is no difference between the cover up and your skin. Blend blend blend!! Allow to dry.

Finally, apply the translucent powder, using your blush or bronzer blush, to prevent any shininess that is unnatural.

To Shampoo or Not to Shampoo?

Shampoo is one of the most important chemicals you will use on your hair. What kind and how often influence the entire chemistry and how your hair looks and feels. I always suggest shampoos and conditioners with protein, as that is what keeps our hair strong and frizz free. If you have color treated hair, washing less often can preserve your color and natural oils will replenish shine.

It is difficult to find good shampoos on the high street. Grocery stores and pharmacies carry similar brands, all boasting organic ingredients, but when you read the labels, they fall short. Always talk to your stylist about what is best for you.

I recommend washing your hair 2 to 3 times a week. If you heat style your hair regularly, 1 -2 times a week is preferred and make sure you're using a mask to replenish moisture. If you sport often and feel you have to wet your hair daily, skip shampoo and just use conditioner, which also carries a cleaning agent. Instead of a dry shampoo, which has a lot of harsh chemicals, I prefer using baby powder to absorb oils. Just flip your hair over and apply generously. Brush it out and style!

Moving to Amsterdam was an exciting and rewarding decision, introducing me to an amazing family of hairdressers at the Rob Peetoom Hair and Makeup Salon in Amsterdam. Having the chance to learn from Creative Director and hair genius, Vincent Langedijk and International Color Specialist, Renae Zechner expanded my understanding of hair design as a whole. I cannot contribute my knowledge to these two alone, but the entire team at the Elandsgracht location.

Vincent, Phoebe, Marlie, Jorum and Danny: You've captured the concepts of lines and the way the hair falls in ways I've never seen before. As much as I hated waking up early on my day off for our weekly trainings, I value it all. From short straight, difficult hair to the longest curls, I am confident in every cut I make.

Renae, Puck, Renate, Danny, Keifer, Kirsty: You have inspired me in colors and techniques I've never considered. Photo Phridays - Amsterdam Edition

When I lived in Los Angeles, I had access to two incredible talents: Brenda Stumpf, photographer and graphic designer (http://www.bstumpf.com/) and Suzie Morales, graphic designer and lighting director (http://www.susanmorales.com/) Together with random models we found from anywhere, we created Photo Phridays. Every friday we'd pick a theme and go all out using our talents to make beautiful images.

We recently reunited in Amsterdam and of course, had to plan a photoshoot! The location was a rooftop with views of the city and our model was a client of mine, Heleen Hartong. I love working with Heleen. She usually lets me do whatever I want and her raw beauty is easy to accentuate. I decided the theme should be candy inspired, with lots of fun, bright colors. I bought 6 different eyelashes and cut them up and layered them for a more creative effect. I used bright colors to create a sharp contour of Heleen's cheekbones.

Orly Bonder Base Coat

It's a rubber bonding agent that fulfills it's bold promise: Nail Polish lasts up to two weeks without chipping. As a hairdresser, I know to have a manicure is pure luxury...for a day. Sjoerd Vis: Menopause and your beauty

Menopause is one of the most confusing and exhausting time in the woman's beauty world. Estrogen levels are going mad and with that comes dry skin, dry scalp, dark circles and bags! I have been asked for advice from women that are varied in age, ethnicity and location, but the complaints are all the same. Your dry, itchy skin no longer fits.

While I know how important proper diet and exercise are in a beauty routine, I am not an expert in skin care (yet). I decided to consult Skin Guru Sjoerd Vis at the Rob Peetoom Beauty in

Amsterdam. His career began in physiology before specializing in skin care. When I brought up the topic of menopause, he sympathized immediately.

He began by commenting that in some cases, we just have to be patient. As for what we can control, he offered up a 6 step program to help improve our skin.

Cleanse x2s twice a day, morning and night... (Yes, he means 4 times a day)

Contrary to when you were a teenager and stimulating sebaceous oil was a bad thing, now you have to massage your skin to get your skin secretions producing. Try to always find heavy moisturizing ingredients with lipids and oils.

Begin by using a milk cleanser, the creamier the better. This is not so much for the cleansing, but more to moisturize your skin so the cleanser does not dry you out. It will also help to remove make up.

Follow with a foam cleanser that has lipids. Massage into skin for 30 seconds, to stimulate blood flow and circulation. Cleansing is important because it removes makeup, dirt and bacteria

from the face, unfortunately that includes the oils that are good for our skin. How do we get these oils back?

Toner

Toner is important as it re-moisturizes the skin after cleansing (so important to keep moisturizing!) and returns skin back to its natural pH level of 5.8 (for women). He suggests to always find something that is good for your eye area, as that way you know it is gentle and will not aggravate your skin. Baby oil is a nice and budget friendly option. Apply to your face with a cotton pad.

Next step is more moisture!

A cream that is packed with vitamins A & E and more lipids!

Follow with a heavy cream.

Sgoerd believes that you should always apply the heaviest amounts of moisture last. If you have the budget, Sgoerd suggests La Prairie Cellular Radience Cream. It contains a special ingredient, Phytosteron Complex, which is a synthetic hormone that acts like estrogen. It fools the skin into thinking it is not in menopause! It's the only product in the world that has this hormone, which explains its price.

In this economy? I like Femme Science's Night Cream. Its packed with antioxidents, shea butter,

vitamins A, C, and E and $44 gets you a little jar that is heavy and lasts more than 3 months (so far!)

Lastly, never, ever forget your sunblock!

The sun will only cause new damage and make current symptoms more aggressive. After all that work, we must preserve the good we've done!

Baby powders and oils

Dry itchy scalps due to excessive sweating from hot flashes can be remedied with baby powder. Apply all over your body to absorb perspiration and use on your hair instead of shampooing to preserve precious scalp oil. Wash hair once a week with gentle, moisturizing shampoos and heavy conditioners. Follow every shower with a splash of baby oil before patting dry to help lock in moisture. My mother has found baby products in general work best for her.

In the Kitchen

Sgoerd suggests eggs. Egg whites are great but yolks carry the most lipids. Any kind of oil in your kitchen (olive, sunflower, etc) is great for the face. Products with caviar are great for dry, aging skin.

Seal it with a kiss

Vaseline is a great solution for dry chapped slips, and even for removing eye make up. Apply a layer over lipstick to seal in color, lock in moisture. The shine makes your lips look fuller!

All hair needs protein, moisture and a proper diet in order to be healthy and grow. Your hair reflects what is going on on the inside. So if you are up all night partying, drinking, smoking and not eating well, your hair is going to be limp, lifeless and have no shine.

Diet

As your hairdresser, it is important I know what you're lifestyle is like, so I can treat your hair. Alcohol is very dehydrating and

if you are drinking regularly (even 1 glass of wine a day) it is very important to increase your water intake so that you can retain moisture.

Smoking imparts a build up of toxins on your hair, effecting your hair color and shine. To remove those toxins, look for shampoos and conditioners with antioxidants like green tea.

Hair needs a diet that is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. Protein can be found in foods like poultry, fish, eggs, beans and yogurt. I always recommend my clients to take B vitamins as vitamin B(B-6 specifically) can help to reduce the effect stress has on your body and hair. Other vitamins that are good for improving hair growth are biotin, folic acid, and inositol, which is a carb that can be found in cereals, nuts, beans, fruit specifically melons and

oranges. Minerals that are good for hair growth and health are magnesium, sulfur, silica and zinc. Soy protein is the best for strengthening hair and increasing growth. Tofu is an excellent source of soy protein.

Protein

So how do we know that our hair is lacking protein? If you've ever chemically processed your hair, even just once, you've already reduced your hair's protein by at least 20%. Chemical processing causes the hair cuticle to not fully shut. Once the cuticle layers are lifted, they absorb light instead of reflecting light, resulting in no shine. If your hair is frizzy, unmanageable or falling out excessively, then you will benefit from a protein treatment. Redken Extreme Deep Fuel Treatments are filled with proteins, ceramides and lipids which helps restore very distressed hair back to its natural, healthy state. Moisture

Hair looses moisture in many ways. Lack of water, aggressive shampooing, heat styling and product build up all cause hair to become dry and brittle. These issues combined with chemical processing and you have a real problem.

Your scalp produces an oil, that can repair your hair, called sebum. Sebum is a fatty acid that protects the hair and scalp and keeps bacteria from growing and retarding hair growth. Sebum gives hair moisture and shine.

Washing your hair everyday is one of the worst things that you can do. Regularly stripping your hair of sebum, can result in overproduction of it which causes hair to become more oily. Your hair will adjust to your routine. Washing your hair 2 to 3 times a week is plenty. If it is damaged, skip the shampoo and go straight to a conditioner.

If you've damaged your hair through heat styling and chemical processing, Pureology SuperSmooth Products are a great solution. Silicone Products

Silicone based products are one of the best ways to improve hair condition and shine. They are water repellent which are great for fighting humidity. FemmeScience: a new generation in skincare

I love dabbling in all areas of beauty and my latest project had directed me toward skincare. I have been working with FemmeScience to design skincare tutorials featuring their sophisticated and luxurious products. The best part is I get to keep the products!

I've had a chance to use the products for over a month now and these are my favorites:

Face Cleanser

I wear makeup almost every day so I need a strong cleanser but I also have very dry, sensitive skin. My boyfriend has combination skin, and hates anything with fragrance or dye. So finding a face cleanser that we can share is nearly impossible (Clinique came close). Femme Science's Face Cleanser is hydrating but also has triple action cleansers and their entire philosophy is about keeping the ingredients to the basic, natural needs of our skin. Green Tea and Pomegranate are powerful antioxidants. Aloe is soothing, Avocado is moisturizing and Vitamins A, C and E...well I shouldn't have to tell you. This is good stuff.

Age Control

Final Exams: Rock On

Today I had my Final Exam at the Rob Peetoom Academy in Amsterdam, be creative and execute it well. I decided to combine inspiration from some of my favorite fashion shows, art galleries and magazines to create updo's with contrasting makeup for a Rock On effect. Maurice de Vlaminck was known for his daring composition and strong bold colors. I wanted to apply those sharp lines, abstract shapes and rugged texture with more natural colors.

I cut my model's hair Sunday night and blowdried forward with Redken's Fabricate 03 and a

round brush. She arrived this morning with it unwashed. I began by applying Redken's Align 12 and blowdrying her hair upside down to get the most volume. I tied her hair into a tight pony tail at the top of her head.

With a crimping iron, I took small diagonal slices, spray with Redken 09 and crimp from top to

bottom. Once completed, I back brushed the sections and created abstract looks. I love working with hair because it is such a pliable material. The makeup was natural with bold colors and angles. I mixed her foundation with Youngblood Lunar Dust in Twilight for a golden effect. Each look was altered slightly to compensation for the change in feeling with each hairstyle.

After the day was over, I treated my model to a scalp massage and a conditioning treatment with Redken's All Soft Heavy Cream to replenish the moisture in her hair. Just For Men: Basic Grooming

Often men are overlooked in the beauty world and can feel overwhelmed with all the options available. Basic grooming is important for everyone and can make a difference in how you look, feel and are perceived. Skin care and haircare are the basics to getting to most beauty out of yourself.

Skin

Healthy skin is vital to looking and feeling attractive. Eyes, smile, skin - these are the first things people are noticing about you. Its important to determine your skin type, so you can know the best way to take care of it. All skin requires moisturizer, sunscreen, plenty of water and a diet rich in vitamins A, C and E.

Normal skin has a smooth an even texture with small pores. Cleanse routinely and exfoliate (use a scrubby wash) twice a week.

Dry skin feels tight after washing, feels rough and flaky and requires special care. A healthy diet with foods high in water content and limited alcohol and caffeine intake. Use a rich cleaners and a good moisturizer. Layering different moisturizers can work wonders for very dry skin. Air conditioning and heating can cause a dry environment so counter this by using a humidifier.

Oily skin is shiny, especially on the forehead, nose and chin and has frequent breakouts. It is caused by overactive sebaceous (oil-producing) glands. The bright side is it shows few signs of aging! Cleans the face twice a day and use an alcohol free astringent to remove excess oil. A common mistake is to skip moisturizer, however this can cause your skin condition to worsten, as your skin thinks it needs even more oil. Always use oil-free moisturizers to keep the skin nourished.

Combination Skin is oily through the t-zone but dry in other areas. Care requires regular cleansing, toning and moisturizing of the oily areas, and a milder cleanser and denser moisturizer for the dry areas. Moisturizers with alpha- hydroxy acids (AHA) is best for this skin type.

Sensitive skin can range from oily to dry and is easily irritated. Use mild, non perfumed cleansers. The body shop carries great products with aloe vera that is especially soothing for sensitive skin. Visit www.thebodyshop.com

Body Hair Maintenance

Tweezing your eyebrows is easy and does not have to be painful. Well groomed eyebrows can make your eyes pop. Brows that grow too far down can make you look sad.

Start by tweezing the middle hairs until the space between your eyebrows is clean. Next, tweeze the hairs furthest underneath the eyebrows. To keep a masculine shape, only clean up the natural hairline.

Hair that is growing out of the ears and nose must be maintained. To cut your nose hair, use nostril hair scissors, which are rounded at the tip to minimize risk for injury. Your hairdresser should maintain your ear hair for you, but you can keep it up in between visits with an electric shaver.

Shaving your face is optional in my book, although maintain your facial hair is not. If you have a baby face and prefer to look more rugged, ditch your razer and use a clipper at the No. 1 setting. However, if your facial hair grows in patchy, its best to go with a smooth shave. To get the best smooth shave, shave in the shower when the hair is softened by the heat and steam. Always wash your face before shaving. Rinse your razor after every stroke to remove old hair and achieve the closest shave. After shaving, rinse with cold water to close pores. Apply after shave or face lotion to keep skin from drying out.

Final Touches

This is where we put on our earrings, our favourite heels, a little spritz of perfume. Decide your final touches... maybe a watch or chain? Cologne is a must... every women melts for a man that smells good.

Big cities are filled with diva's who love to be seen. For these girls, the advice is bountiful. What about the girl who doesn't want to be famous, who isn't trying to turn every head on the street...

If your skin is good, you are lucky as beautiful skin goes a long long way and you can skip the foundation. If your tone is slightly uneven, a tinted moisturizer is the most natural way to go.

Youngblood cosmetics just released a Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint. It has a smooth and flawless application, even for very dry skin.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, blush is a must! To decide the best color for you, hold several shades near your face and see which ones add a lift. The right shade will add a pretty glow to the face without looking overdone.

Summer Beauty Tips

I look forward to summer all year. Summer make up gives more freedom than other seasons, because its all about having fun. Beach parties, trips with friends, lounging by the pool, these are the best tricks for beating the heat and looking your best from head to toe, all summer long.

First, always start your summer off with a haircut to get rid of any dead ends. If you don't, the damage from the sun, sand and sea will require you to cut more then you may want to. The beach always dries out my hair, and combined with the humidity of summer, good hair days are rare. Redken's All Soft Gold Perfecting Shine Treatment is great at battling frizz and keeping hair soft and shiny. When it comes to makeup, always choose oil-free to avoid melting in the heat. I love tinted moisturizers instead of foundation. They stay on better when you've been sweating and are usually combined with an SPF to protect your skin, while still providing light to medium coverage. What more can we ask for?

Blushes can be brighter, so don't be afraid of hot pinks and orange, they can be very flattering. Liquid blushes will last longer in the heat, as they stain your cheeks and won't melt when you're sweaty. If you're not ready to take the leap, try bronzer instead of blush for a more natural summer glow. For your eyes, anything liquid based is better. To keep mascara and eyeliner from smearing into your eye lids, dust a pressed powder onto your eyelid to absorb moisture. Now is the time for waterproof mascara!

When it comes to hair removal, you have to pick your poison. I say whatever works, stick with that. I prefer shaving but some women really love the convenience of waxing. It leaves legs smoother and lasts much longer. Hair removal creams also work great but usually come with a foul smell and I don't recommend it for women with sensitive skin.

Ditch the boots and welcome sandals into your life, I always kick start the season with a pedicure. After a shower, cut and file toenails square with rounded edges to avoid painful ingrown toe nails. Push cuticles back and buff nails with a nail buffer. Pick your favorite color, the brighter the better! Apply a base coat, two coats of polish and a top coat. Allow to fully dry.

Whatever your plans, make sure that you always use sunblock and drink extra water. Dehydration is a beauty killer!

Finding Inspiration

Moving to Amsterdam has been such an inspiring experience. The city is bursting with art and creativity, history and the pursuit of passion. I recently visited the Hermitage in Amsterdam where the Pioneers of Modern Art are currently on display. Matisse to Malevich, the actual pieces were sent over from the original Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. This is the first time such an extensive collection of avant-garde pieces have been on display in the Netherlands. To view the collection click here. The collection explores the origins of moderns art as well as the passion of the artist during such a crucial moment in history. My goal was to find new inspiration for hair and makeup for photo shoots to come...

The painting above is from Vasily Kandinsky. Composition VI was painted the eve before the first World War. The emotion portrayed has always been admired by painters and it was only Kandinsky's first abstract work. He said there are 3 forms of abstraction: Impression, Improvisation, and Composition. Maurice de Vlaminck was another painter featured, for his incredible use of strong color and daring composition. He advised to paint strait from the tube, though his choice of color became more tempered with time. Henri Matisse was also known for his striking use of color, using blue and green on a large scale canvas (Game of Bowls, 1908).

How might these theories be applied to makeup as art? Composition, light, color balance, and expression are all the basics of a prevailing image. One of the most inspirational projects I've found has been the duo between photographer, painter Gail Hadani and makeup artist Paul Innis. Innis admired Hadani's use of light and composition and together they created Candyland, a makeup masterpiece. Innis believes any product can be used to transform a face into a work of art. To the left, he used colored sugar as a starting point and following his imagination from there. Hadani expresses that to her: camera , lighting and makeup are paintbrushes used to create a beautiful photo. I have always admired this project and hope to use it as a starting point for my own soon...

Pureology: Serious Color Care

Good hair care is like chemistry. This is why it is important to find a good stylist who understands your needs. Taking care of your hair is an entire process, like tending to a garden. Sometimes your hair needs moisture, sometimes protein. Your routine should change with the weather and age and whether or not you color. I started using the Pureology Systems on my clients about 6 months ago and I am impressed.

The line is based around color treated hair, however I recommend their products for any client. As we learned last summer, sun and salt can be destructive for color treated hair (click here for article). Free radicals attack hair and color pigments. Behind the Scenes of Danie Bles: Mix & Match Summer Tour 2010

Dutch Fashion Stylist Danie Bles held her Mix and Match 2010 fashion show in Amsterdam, mixing various designers to show off the latest trends for this summer. Themes from the show were The City, Denim, Beach, Dinner & Dance and the Finale, which included shoe designs by Danie in collaboration with Manfield. This show was a pleasure to work, because Danie knows exactly what she wants. Organized from start to finish, the show ran without a hitch.

Hair was classic and sexy: Summer waves with volume and shine. Hair was prepared by rolling into curls and set with a flexible hairspray. Curls were released and loosened for softness moments before the models hit the runway. For the second look, the loose ends were tied into a low knot for a sweet, carefree feeling.

Makeup was all about bronze, glowing skin with subtle smokey eyes. Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics was used by makeup artists. Eyes were layered with shitake eyeshadow, followed with a rich plum in the contour and under the eyes. Subtle MAC Pigment was added over the eyelid for shine. A shimmery vanilla color was applied to the inner corner and under the brow bone. Black eyeshadow was added to the outer corners for more drama. Eyeliner and mascara was applied.
Foundation was mixed with bronzer to create a summer glow. Youngblood Loose Mineral Blush in Rouge was applied to the cheeks and temples. Lunar dust in Twilight was applied to the upper cheekbone.
Lips were kept natural with Pout lipliner and lipgloss in Demure.

For the finale look, chinese red was applied to the lips.

Backstage, the energy was high but not stressed. Danie had finger food and snacks for the entire crew as well a music for us to work to. Hair and Makeup team was provided by Rob Peetoom salons. The makeup was designed by celebrity makeup artist Carla Rep.

OPI: Inspired by Alice in Wonderland

Spring and Summer are great seasons to experiment with new, fun colors so don't be afraid to see where a new path can take you...

When giving yourself a manicure, you want to begin by removing old nail polish completely. Soak your fingers for 10 minutes in warm soapy bubbles. File nails going in one direction; this is important and takes discipline to avoid peeling nails. Apply a cuticle cream and push cuticles back with a wooden stick. Use a moisturizing lotion to massage hands; if skin is rough exfoliate using a sugar or salt scrub. Rinse thoroughly and dry hands. Now your nails are ready for a new color. I always like to wipe my nails with acetone or alcohol before applying polish to remove any oils that will prevent the color from adhering to your nails. Always apply a base coat, 2 coats of polish and a top coat.

OPI is always my favorite choice for nail polish because it last so long and they have such a wide selection of colors. The new Alice in Wonderland colors are wondrous and imaginative. The best part is, the more you tan the better the colors will pop!

Asymmetrical Haircuts - Playing with the Lines

Recently I've been requested to do a number of asymmetrical haircuts ranging from skin length to shoulder length. Women of all ages and types are taking a plunge by taking the blade to their hair. Short hair is easy maintenance. Alternating on the degree of layers and direction of a haircut, a bob can flatter almost any face shape. An inverted bob can add dimension to a round face and an angled bob can soften hard lines.

I have a habit of growing my hair long and chopping it into the Pob (Posh Bob). That haircut calls to me, its one of my favorites and most fun to do. Its easy to blowdry and looks great with hair accessories. Short hair doesn't have to be masculine and asymmetrical haircuts do not have to be unattainable. It can add a level of fierceness with just as much precision as a symmetrical line.

Disclosure: Remember if you love your long locks, don't be carried away with trends. Long hair takes years to grow, so use caution before you chop away inches.

Ready to take the plunge? Here's some advice before you sit in the chair. Select a hair dresser you trust and who knows you. He or she should make the best decision on cut, color and style for your face shape and lifestyle. Decide where will be the shortest and longest point. I have found that as asymmetrical cut starting at chin length at one side to shoulder length on the other side can be very feminine and pretty. Bring pictures of what you have in mind. Make sure that you ask questions about the care and maintenance of your new 'do. Finally, remember to rock your haircut with confidence. There is something sexy about a woman who bends the rules and gets away with it.

Beauty starts with great skin. That is why it is so important to take care of your skin on a regular basis. Eating a balanced diet, drinking lots of water, avoiding excessive alcohol and smoking, and always wear sunblock will ensure that your skin is at its best. When deciding on a foundation, the right color will look like you're not wearing any makeup at all. The goal is for even toned, great looking skin.

When selecting a formula of foundation, you must decide what is best for your skin and style. A tinted moisturizer is great for freckles, as it doesnt mask your beauty spots. Stick foundation is great for any kind of skin and my favorite comes from Bobbi Brown, a women who truly understands skin tones. For dry skin or aged skin I recommend a liquid foundation and of course and oil free foundation for oily skin.

Always start your makeup application with a clean, moisturized face. Priming the skin will help makeup adhere to the face and can brighten skin tone and close pores. Use concealer to even out strong pigment changes, such as dark eye circles or redness around the nose. Blend blend blend! Now time for foundation. Once you've chosen the right color, you can apply with a sponge, a nylon brush or your fingers. I personally like to apply foundation with my fingers, as the warmth of body heat helps to control and blend the makeup into the skin. Make sure to blend down into the next and up into the hairline so there are no lines of demarcation. Always make sure to check your foundation selection in natural light to make sure the color disappears on to your skin.

Its important remember when doing makeup for video the lighting will much brighter so an even skin tone and enhancing contour is key. Shooting can take hours, this 2 minute commercial took 5 hours to record, which means retouches were mandatory! Powder anyone?

Dark Circles Makeup Tutorial

Lets face it. Most of us are not getting a regular 8 hours of sleep and we mask it with venti latte's and concealer. Stress, depression and improper diet are worn on our face making us look tired and unprepared. Dark circles come from a variety of reasons and they can be difficult to cover up. So lets start the day right with a fresh face and covering those dark circles properly.

Start with using a refreshing cleanser. Wash the sleep away and leave your face feeling bright. Shiseido makes a Brightening Cleaning Foam that is great for day or night, removes your impurities and leaves your skin glowing. Next apply a skin lotion or tonic. This will close your pores and tighten your skin, preparing it for make up. Do not forget to moisturize. This is most important and the secret to beautiful skin. You will want to chose a moisturizer that is best for your skin type.

Starting with a clean canvas is important to see what you really need. To cover dark circles, choose a concealer as it has a denser pigment than foundation. You will want base the type of concealer you get on your skin type. If you are light skin, then you can use just a want as it provides sheer coverage. For darker, olive skin tones pots and sticks work great as they have an opaque coverage. Cream concealers work for dry skin and I use them most often. My favorite is Makeup Forever 5 Camouflage Cream Palette, they can correct any flaw.
Selecting a color with golden undertones will neutralize the blue/purple tones of the dark circles. I like to use a brush to get good coverage on delicate eye skin, but you can also use your third finger. Make sure to blend properly. A sheer coverage of foundation or powder sets this look.

Add a coat of brown mascara (looks more fresh than black) and a bit of blush to your cheeks to give yourself a fresh look.

I know that it is a cheesy holiday, but I look forward to Valentine’s Day. It gives busy lovers a chance to stop and show a little romance. Behind the scenes: Attilio Brancaccio Black and White Helmet

I’ve worked with Attilio on many concepts and each time I am surprised with his creativity. He has been working on an ongoing series and proposed a helmet made out of black and white photos he had taken. The feeling was crisp and clean defining emotions without using words. The expression on the model's face captures the secret behind each photograph.

The makeup was simple but meticulous. The skin was primed with an illuminating makeup base. Black non toxic paint was used to on the model's bust and entire face. I layered 3 coats for an even non streaky finish using a nylon bristle brush. I went over the contours of her body and face with MAC black track for a glossy shine. Then I used Makeup Forever cream white eye shadow to paint the inner water line and her upper and lower lashes. Last, her lips were lined and filled with a Chinese red lip liner and then Black lipstick from Kryolan was applied generously. A shiny gloss was the finishing touch.

Behind The Scenes: Ugg Australia Winter 2010 Fashion Show

Sunday, January 10 UGG Australia held its 2010 Winter fashion show at Prince Hendrik's Castle in Apeldoorn, Holland. My colleagues at Rob Peetoom and I had the pleasure of doing the hair and makeup and now I'm bringing you all the behind the scenes information about the hair and makeup used at the show. The theme of the show was Royal Attitude - combining elegant hairstyles with extreme makeup.

Face
Skin was prepared with Sensai Brightening Makeup Base.It smooths and brightens while evening out skin tone and minimizing imperfections.

Youngblood Liquid Mineral Foundation was mixed with more of the Sensai Makeup Base and thinly smoothed using a nylon brush. A lightweight foundation, Youngblood uses deep sea minerals and nutrients for maximum hydration. Adding the makeup base to the foundation kept the face shiny, which in this case is what we wanted. Makeup was set using Youngblood Mineral Rice Setting Powder.

Eyes

Smokey eye is a great way to display attitude. In order to achieve this effect we used golds and black rather than the traditional gray and silver. First MAC Carbon was applied all over the eyelid and blended into the crease. Then MAC Goldmine was applied along the lash line and the inner corner of the eye, as well as underneath the eyes. Gold glitter was heavily applied over Goldmine for added drama. MAC Honesty was used as a highlighter under the brow bone. Black eyeliner lined the upper and lower lashes. Two coats of mascara to finish.

Lips

Red red red! Red can be such a tricky color to use but with practice you can perfect a classic red lip. First start by lining lips with red liner. Usually, you do not have to match your lip liner to your lipstick, just one that will match your lip color will do. However, red tends to bleed so using a red lip liner and filling lips before applying lipstick will help to hold the color in place without any annoying smudges. Rimmel London Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick in Alarm was applied over lined and filled lips. The result: a kiss you cannot resist.

Cheeks

With such intense eyes and lips, cheeks were kept to a minimum using Lancome Bronzer to highlight and bring out cheek bones. Youngblood Lunar Dust was used to highlight the temples, cheeks and forehead and add shimmer to the face and body.

Hair

Hair was prepared with Redken's Bulk Up - a must have for any production. It gives added lift at the roots and allows for long lasting fullness with a flexible hold. To create maximum volume, we used a large curling iron on the base to roll the hair into curls. Secure with boucle clips. Hair was then sprayed with Redken 18 Quick Dry spray and allowed to set.

About an hour before the show, boucle clips were pulled out and hair was teased from the crown to the hairline. Smoothing the top layer, hair was secured into a high pump and sprayed with 23 Forceful Spray. Then secure hair about 1 inch from hairline. A braid was pulled from the back of the crown and wrapped around the pump - hiding the pin and giving a crown effect. The remaining curls cascaded down the model's back.

At the intermission of the show, more black eyeliner was added and smudged around the eyes. Lipstick was blotted for a more matte finish. Hair was taken down and tousled to give a bedroom-like effect. This was my favorite part because its Ugg as we know it - easy to wear.

Essential Repair Systems by Pureology

The Pureology systems are 100% vegan, zero sulfate with antifade complex. What does that mean? We learned earlier how salt and sun can damage the hair and hair color. Pureology uses no salt in their products but substitutes with coconut oil, corn and sugar. These systems are packed with protein and organic botanicals to improve hair condition and enrich color.

A Christmas present from my boyfriend, this rich moisturizing cream is my new obsession. Strawberry seed oil provides omega-3 and omega-4 fatty acids which repairs skin to becoming silky smooth. It smells delicious and lasts for up to 24 hours.

Hydracure Mask by Pureology

A rich creamy treatment that is enhanced with shea, jojoba, mango and avocado butters that improve dehydrated hair. Finishing Touch with Blush

Start by getting to know your face. Feel where the apples of your cheek are, where your cheekbones are and the hollow beneath them. Miss-Green: Behind the scenes

As a Stylist and Makeup artist at Rob Peetoom, I get the opportunity to work with some great people for really cool projects. Recently I did hair and make up for the catalog for Miss Green, an organic clothing company located in the Netherlands. The shoot took place in Amsterdam. My goal was to bring the most beauty naturally out of each of our models.

When wearing basic comfortable clothing, keep the makeup and hair natural and minimal.

First I applied a thin layer of foundation on each woman's face to even out skin tone and create a flawless canvas. Next a soft pink was used to bring out the cheek bones. For the eyes a light brown was applied from eyelid to brow bone going back with a medium brown to create contour. Always make sure to blend thoroughly. For a soft look I used brown eyeliner and mascara as opposed to black which can sometimes be too harsh. Finally a neutral color was applied to the lips with a sheer gloss for effect.

Fall Trend: Red Lips

Red Lips: Love it or hate it but you know you want it. I believe there is a red out there for everyone. Finding the right shade can be difficult. Look in the mirror and consider your hair color, eye color and skin tone. If your hair is brown and your eyes are brown then you should chose a warm matte red. Blue eyes and pale skin should choose a cool velvety red. Fair skin pairs best with a blue undertone color like Clinique Angel Red. Medium and Darker skin can handle more bold colors.

Always line your lips when wearing red as it tends to bleed into the skin. You don't need to try to match the color of your lipstick. A flesh tone pencil will match every color. As for the rest of your makeup keep it light. A soft pink blush and light powder on the eye with one or two coats of mascara will finish this classic look.

How to Get a Great Blow Dry in 20 Minutes

Most working women don't have an hour to spend on their hair each morning but unfortunately cold weather requires us to break out the blow dryer. Here are some tips and tricks to get the most out of your time and energy. Start with the right tools for your hair and your desired look. Depending on how long your hair is will influence what size round brush you want to use. To make your hair clean and smooth, always use the nozzle attachment on the end of the blow dryer. This will direct the air in one uniform stream rather than blowing your hair all over the place, causing frizz.

Start with your shampoo…

Depending on your hair type and how often you heat style your hair; you will want to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner once or twice a week. If you notice your hair gets greasy quickly the temperature of your water may be too hot or you're scrubbing your scalp too hard. Remember: gentle circles with the pads of your finger tips are sufficient. If you're your hair is past your shoulders always apply conditioner to your ends, even if your main desire is volume. Leave the conditioner in your hair from 3-5 minutes, massaging it into the ends of your hair. If you're in the shower, start by shampooing and applying conditioner. While the conditioner is in your hair wash the rest of your body. Rinse your hair last with cool water to help retain shine.

Be efficient…

Begin by towel drying your hair, getting out as much water as possible will reduce your overall blow drying time. Always apply a heat protecting product. Skipping this step will cause split ends causing you to spend more money cutting your hair. If your hair is fine or tends to fall limp, you will want a volumizing product. However if your hair tends to be frizzy you will want a serum or smoothing product. If you find that shortly after blow drying your hair, if becomes frizzy and begins to curl – you are not drying it completely and there is moisture left in your hair. Be sure to dry each section until it is completely dry.

With your blow dryer, continue to get the excess moisture out from the hair using the maximum heat setting and maximum strength. Depending on the thickness of your hair you will want to take 1/2" (1.3 cm) sections, starting at the nape drying each section completely: middle, side, side until you reach the crown. To build volume, roll brush through hair 90 degrees vertically from scalp paying close attention to the root section, then mid-section, then ends. To add body, blow dry hair out 90 degrees from scalp paying close attention to the root section, then mid-section, then ends.

In the front of your hair, section the area above your ear to your temple rolling your brush down and forward. These two areas are the fastest to dry. Finally and most important blow dry the top. This is the area you will want to take your time with because it's what you will see. Blow dry down starting at your hairline above your forehead moving toward your crown. This will build the most volume. Always point your blow dryer down toward the ends. Never hold it in any place for too long as you can burn your hair. It will be difficult to master at first but with time and practice it will become second nature. Finish with blowing your hair with a cool blast. This will give a natural very shiny look as well as close the cuticle of your hair.

Before pulling out the brush from each section, remove the heat and allow hair to cool. This will lock in the style. Gently remove brush. Continue to next section.

*Tip: Blow drying the front of your hair down and inward will create a really soft shape around the face. Finish with a light spray of hairspray to resist the weather and ensures your hard work lasts.

Remember that heat styling your hair will require a little more TLC. Regular masks and trips to the hairdresser will keep your hair healthy.

Tips for a Good Haircut

I always find getting my hair cut or colored to be a somewhat unnerving experience. You never know if you explained what you wanted properly, or if you'll like the result. Here are some tips to remember when at the salon.

DO take the effort to find a great hairdresser that you connect with and knows what they are doing.

DON'T cross your legs when you're getting your hair cut. It makes your haircut uneven because one side of your body is higher than the other.

DO feel comfortable to chat with us. The more we know about your lifestyle, job, and time constraints the better we can personalize your hair to you. If I have a client who I know is a busy mom with two kids and a career, I am not going to recommend Victoria Beckham's haircut to her, which would require tons of upkeep and maintenance.

DON'T be afraid to bring a picture, even if it a picture of what you don't want.

DO ask your hairdresser

How often you should wash your hair?
What kind of shampoo you need to be using at home?
Should you condition and how often?

Taking care of your hair at home is imperative to keeping it healthy.

DO talk to us if you are thinking about making a change, or would like us to do something different.

DON'T try anything at home! Not even trimming your fringe. Most places will do this as a service for you.

Do You Shades EQ?

Every now and then we need a little change. Either you get the itch to cut your hair really short… or you want to dye it black… or in my case purple. Being a stylist and makeup artist and ever obsessed with the brilliance of haircolor, I am always playing with different looks. So today I dumped Redken ShadesEQ in 3RV over my level 7 caramel brown with highlights. The result: A classical brilliant violet red. I am inlove.

I have a deep respect for Shades EQ and what it can do. Shades EQ can enrich natural color, refresh faded haircolor or tone highlighted hair. It is a must have for color corrections. Because it's a demi-permanent haircolor, it will not lighten hair and it does not alter the natural pigment of the hair. So when I come home and see the not so happy look on my boyfriend's face, I can assure him that it isn't permanent and if he really hates it just another shades eq can make it brown again. Summer Hair Care: Color Treated Locks

Sometimes coloring your hair seems inevitable so we need to give some extra love to our locks during the summer. Hair that has been dyed or highlighted is more prone to damage caused by the environment such as UV rays from the sun. Sun rays will make the cuticle even rougher becoming dried out and fragile and could possibly break off. Chlorine can turn blonde hair green and cause serious damage to the hair follicle. Sand and Salt water damage is magnified on already stressed follicles.

Sun, salt and chlorine strip the moisture out of hair, even if your hair is initially healthy so always use products that contain SPF protection. When swimming, always wet your hair first and apply conditioner. If you swim regularly, get a cap to protect your hair color from the damaging chemicals and minerals in water. Wearing a swim cap may not be the most flattering look but having faded, fried hair is much less attractive. Always use a shampoo and conditioner that provide color protection but occasionally, you should consider a detox shampoo like Aveda's Sun Care Hair Cleaner to remove chemicals from the salt, pool and other toxins.

In addition to the basics, you should deep condition your hair once a week (every other week if your hair is fine or short). Products that contain keratin and wheat germ will add moisture and shine. Try not to wash your hair too often as this can really dry out your ends and fade color, so two to three times a week is plenty.

If your hair is already damaged, don't despair. Ask your hairstylist for a product that provides damage recovery with restoring, hydrating or lubricating. Always a fan of Redken, the After Sun Mask is great because it replenishes and repairs, restores vibrancy, and protects against environmental dangers. I recommend it to all my clients who are going on holiday or planning to spend a lot of time in the sun or pool. Always let your colorist know if you've been swimming or spending a lot of time in the sun so they can adjust your color formula accordingly. Summer Hair Care – The Basics

For most, summer time means lounging by the pool sipping cocktails or on the beach soaking up rays. Before you hit the sand and sea, there are a few things you should know to protect your hair.

The Basics

Always start your summer off with a haircut of at least ¼ inch (approx 0.5cm). This will keep your ends fresh, and prevent splitting. Since its already hot outside, there is no need for hot showers. So give your hair a break and enjoy the cool water. It's great for your skin too, if you can handle it.

Now is the time to really treat your hair well by using gentle shampoos and conditioning regularly. All too often, we make the decision to go lighter for summer. But don't become a slave to the bleach now, your hair will be more vulnerable to summer elements if it is color treated. Mainly, your hair care should depend on your exposure to the sun, sand, salt water, and pools.

Sun

The most important thing you can do this summer, besides a haircut, is find a product that has SPF protection. It must have octyl methoxycinnamate to be effective. Redken's Color Extend Sun Sparkling Sheild leave-in Smoother helps provide water-resistant protection against UVA/UVB rays, chlorine and minerals and keeps your hair sleek.

The sun is hair's greatest seasonal enemy. You should try to avoid it between 10am and 3pm, and always try to cover up. Sun rays can not only burn your skin, but can cause some serious damage to your scalp and hair, as well. Unprotected hair will fry in UVA and UVB rays, which cause your hair to become more porous. When brushed or irritated by sand, hair will have broken strands, split ends, rapid color fading and excessive dryness. The result is hair that is like straw. This is only good if you're planning a pixie cut at the end of summer.

Use the sun to your benefit and apply a conditioning treatment before you hit the beach or pool. Slick your hair back into a bun and relax. This will make your hair like a helmet, protecting it from the sun, sand and salt water. However, even after 1 hour you should still cover up with a hat or scarf. If you find yourself blazing and you don't have any protection, use sunscreen or cover up. Now is the time to pull out the straw cowboy hat.

Sand and Salt water

Sand is an abrasive substance. This is great for exfoliating rough parts of your skin, but it is terrible for your hair and scalp. Sand and salt cause breakage by sitting on the hair shaft and working down toward the scalp causing thinning hair. The result is a hair cuticle that is made up of broken pieces. Color particles are lost and hair is hard to style because it is weak. Always wash your hair right away after coming out of the water or away from the beach. Even though the ocean is less damaging that chlorine water, salt water can still destroy the hair. Salt particles also blocking the absorption of conditioning treatments, making them less effective and your hair to be dry.

Fresh water can also be harmful. Lakes contain minerals that cling to hair. Minerals can build up and cause dullness and dryness. Before you dive into any type of water, wet your hair first and apply conditioner. Hair is like a sponge, it can only absorb so much.

Pools

Chlorinated water is the most devastating to hair, especially to hair color. Chlorine is a disinfectant to water but it oxidizes hair color causing discoloration. Always wet your hair before you dive in and wash your hair right away after getting out of the pool.

When deciding on a color palette for your makeup, you will want to select warm/natural colors as they will give you that bridal glow. To select the best natural color for you, it should be a similar shade as your skin, lighter or slightly darker depending on the contour. The goal is to look like you, only flawless. You will want to take care of waxing/tweezing/threading your eyebrows the day before. As always, start with a clean moisturized face.

First apply foundation as described here.

Using an angle brush, apply eyebrow powder 1-2 shades lighter than your hair color, to keep face looking soft.

Using a large eye shadow brush, apply MAC Vanilla under the eyebrow. Using the small shadow brush and beginning at your inner eye, apply golden brown eye shadow. Blend into the crease toward the outer eye and around the under eye area. Blend well. Apply warm beige on the inner corner of the eye. You can also use a golden shimmer here, for a slightly more dramatic look. For tips on creating contour click here.

Brownish-black eye pencil is applied on the inner and outer rim of the eye, staying as close as possible to the lash line. Blend and smudge into the upper lash line. This will strengthen and define the eye.

Depending on your skin tone, eye color and desires you can use a brown mascara or black. Most of the time, I select black to add some drama to the eyes. DiorShow in Black is my favorite waterproof mascara for any event. Always curl your lashes first and apply at least two coats of mascara. Some brides like to use false eyelashes on their wedding day. I think that this can be a great way to make your eyes really sparkle without using too much makeup. My suggestion is to find eyelashes that start small on the inner line and gradually get bigger toward the outside, as they look most natural. If you are allergic to latex, use caution when selecting glue as many have latex and can really irritate the eye.

Apply a warm peach powder onto the apples of the cheeks, temples and chin – for contour.

I love MAC Freckle lipstick with Nymphette as a gloss over it. This always creates a sexy pout that looks natural and radiant.

"What is the best way to keep my face looking bright (for my wedding day)?" – Liz

On your wedding day, you want all eyes on you – not your makeup. There are many things to factor in when considering your makeup selection for the big day. Will there be indoor lighting or outdoor/natural? Will you have a photographer? If so, flash will need to be taken into consideration. Foundations with titanium dioxide cause make up colors to change when flash hits, causing a mask-like appearance. The last thing you want is to get your proofs back only to find that you look like Mimi from the Drew Carrey Show.

PREPERATION

There are so many things to do when preparing for your wedding, selecting menus and music lists, linens and flowers, favors, etc. Don't let your skin care routine get neglected! Drinking plenty of water, using a gentle cleanser and always moisturizing should be part of your every day routine. Do not, I repeat, do not starting treating your skin to facials and extractions weeks or days before the wedding. Facials tend to draw out impurities and you don't want to battle a break out. If you feel you must have a deep cleansing, do it at least 6 weeks prior to give your skin plenty of time to recover.

Scheduling your bachelorette party a night or two before the wedding day is a bad idea. Alcohol, caffeine and lack of sleep wreck havoc on our skin and is not easily covered by makeup.

Exfoliate your face 2-3 times a week, depending on your skin type, paying attention to the nasal area. If you suffer from dark circles, refer to treating dark circles. You can also use an eye brightening cream. I recommend Clinique All About Eyes – available here. Makeup is best applied to clean, moisturized skin.

PRIMER

Apply a primer prior to foundation to keep your makeup in place all day and to control oil. I love Bare Essentials Prime Time Foundation Primer and Oil Control. It has SPF 15 and allows foundation to go on smooth.

FOUNDATION

Next to finding the right man, finding the right shade of foundation is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Test on your skin, test in natural sunlight, test in the store, test when you get home, wear it all day and see how your skin reacts. Always chose a foundation that is non-comedogenic. It's a big word but it just means it won't clog your pores. Foundation is one item in your makeup case that is ok to spend a good amount of money on. This is not to say that the most expensive products are the best, which can be far from true. However, drug store brands are known for having high amounts of titanium dioxide and other chemicals that will put your skin on the highway to breakout heaven. Here are some things to consider:

Skin type

Is my skin oily? Yes – then you will want to choose an oil free foundation. Cream to powder types is the best for your skin. If you have dry skin then you will need a foundation that will add moisture, such as cream, whipped or liquid. If you have normal skin then liquid blends are the way to go. Are you prone to break outs? You may want to use a toner or astringent prior to applying foundation as this will tighten your pores and keep them from clogging.

Undertone

Most people have yellow undertones in their skin, however fair skin types can have pink pigments. Even with pink pigments, you may still want to select a foundation with a yellow undertone, as pink foundations can be too rosy and have mask-like appearance.

Always check the foundation in natural light to make sure it matches. If the color disappears on your skin, then it is the right shade. You may need a different shade in summer from winter.

There are also many methods to applying foundation. Once I select the color, I like to use a nylon brush to apply lightly on the forehead, temples, cheeks and jaw line. Using downward strokes, blend all over the face with a sponge or fingers. This ensures a thin layer of foundation that does not look cakey. The goal is to create perfectly even skin.

Concealer

Some makeup artists like to apply concealer after foundation, some before. For me, it depends what I am using the concealer for. If you are using it to even out skin tone, including covering dark circles, I like to apply concealer first. For covering blemishes, I apply it last.

To make the face look bright, naturally and in photographs, select a concealer 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation. Using a concealer brush or your third finger, apply a thin layer under the eye, from the inner edge to the outer corner. Blend under the eye, into nose and temples with a sponge or fingers.

Applying a lighter color in these areas will draw the flash of the camera toward the center of your face, ensuring you are a glowing bride.

Powder

Always set foundation with a translucent powder. Keep a compact of pressed powder with you to control shine. You can also use a light application of shimmer powder to keep your skin sparkling the entire night and a light dusting on the inner corner of the eye will make you look more awake. Who knows how late the festivities can go!

Tip: Always carry makeup remover (cloths are great and portable) – as makeup can be difficult to remove, especially off a white dress!

Dark Circles: Causes and Natural Treatments

Recently a colleague asked me for natural remedies for dark circles. My first suggestions were more sleep, more water and cool cucumber slices or warm chamomile/lavender tea bags over the eyes for 5-10 minutes. But what causes dark circles? And what other ways can we get rid of these tired bags?

CAUSES OF DARK CIRCLES:

The standard culprits are fatigue, stress or depression, diet, aging and genetics. We can't control the latter but ensuring plenty of sleep, proper diet and exercise will keep these under eye visitors at bay and ensure that you age gracefully. I know we've heard it a hundred thousand times, but I am a true believer that beauty starts on the inside.

If you're getting enough sleep and exercise, eating well and still suffering, you could be retaining fluid. Nasal congestion, too much sun, a buildup of toxins, and scratching eyes can break capillaries which causes dark circles.

Dark circles can also be indications of other deeper issues, so don't just conceal and move on. Try to figure out what is causing them for you and treat it properly. Dehydration, vitamin deficiencies, and excess use of drugs or medications are serious issues that have dark circles as a symptom.

Vitamin Deficiencies: Sun, Stress and Sangria

Everything we do to our bodies will effect us in some way, positive and negative. Too much of anything isn't good and even a little bit of some things can cause havoc on our exterior. Deficiencies in Vitamin B and K are the most common for causing dark circles.

Sun: The sun thins and weakens our skin, causing dark circles. Light (sun) exposure destroys Vitamin K. Always wear SPF 15, even if you're not going to the beach.

Stress: Stress changes our cells to make them resistant to death, increasing our risk of cancer. It also causes us to worry and lose sleep. Vitamin B is imperative to helping our bodies deal with stress.

Sangria: Alcohol also destroys Vitamin K, as well as prevents us from getting proper sleep as it inhibits us from going into REM sleep. REM is incredibly important to our mental health, including dealing with stress.

TREATMENTS

Cool sliced cucumbers or potatoes held over the eyes for 5-10 minutes have always worked for me to get rid of dark circles. I also like hot tea bags if the day has been stressful. Here are some other recipes for natural remedies to get rid of dark circles. Use caution not to get anything in your eye and for best results, leave the treatment on your eye for a minimum of 5 minutes, 3 times a week.

Paste:

1 tsp of Tomato Juice

½ tsp of Lemon/Lime juice

Pinch of Tumeric powder and gramflour

Mix together and apply to under eye area for 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

Cream:

Equal parts of Almond Oil, Honey and Half and Half; mix and apply to under eye area for 5-10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

Oils:

Almond oil, Vitamin E oil, Rose water, or crushed mint leaves have all been known to reduce under eye circles.

Q&A: How do I apply eye shadow?

A common question, with no easy answer…

There are not many rules when it comes to makeup, only guidelines you can follow. Remember makeup is another form of art and you are only inhibited when you limit yourself to one or two techniques. There are a hundred different ways to apply eye shadow, depending on the look you're trying to achieve.

With that said, here are two basic techniques that will give you a good foundation when it comes to applying eye shadow.

BASIC WASH

A basic wash usually requires one or two similar colors, differing in intensity and brightness. Using a shadow brush, apply the darker color all over the eyes from lid to brow bone, building color in the outer crease of the eyelid. Apply the lighter color under the arch of your eyebrow and in the inner corner of your eye. This will create a subtle contour, ensuring to emphasis your eyes.

You can use almost any color combination to achieve this look. Light colors applied with a thick line of black eyeliner, slightly winged will achieve a "Marilyn Monroe" look. Pastel colors are great for spring, bold colors for autumn.

The basic wash can be worn with or without eyeliner. To add intensity, brush eye shadow softly under the eye using a shadow brush.

Curl eyelashes and apply at least two coats of mascara, in the color of your liking.

CREATING CONTOUR

Creating contour takes the basic wash to the next step. Here, you will need a third color. As you become more comfortable with using makeup and different techniques you can use more colors to add depth and contrast.

Starting with your medium color (For natural looks use a brown or crème, apricot or tawny, depending on your skin tone and eye color) apply to the crease of the eyelid and blend well. Then using a small eye shadow brush, a white/crème color is blended into the lid and brow bone. These colors are only for guidance on a natural look. You can alter the colors based on your preferences and desires. You can also apply your highlighter to the inner corner or your eye and along the inner part of your lower lid to add a little sparkle!

For contour, apply the darker shadow as close to the lashes as possible and around the outer crease of the eye lid. The formation should look like a sideways V. Tip: Start with a lighter application, building layers to add depth and intensity.

This look can be worn with or without eyeliner, though I prefer with eyeliner.

Curl eyelashes and apply at least two coats of mascara.

How to: Pink Eyes for Summer with Anastasia George

Summertime is a great time to wear bright colors, but application always takes time, patience and careful product selection. Try less in the beginning and increase as you go along, layering until you've achieved your desired look.

The colorful face shown here is Anastasia George – model and friend. For this shoot I chose bright pinks and gold to compliment her natural coloring from lounging by the pool.

Apply tinted moisturizer all over the face. For this look we used Kiss My Face in Beach. Loose powder is applied sparingly over the face. I like to apply foundation with my fingertips as I feel it blends into the skin better. You may also use a foundation sponge or a foundation brush.

The brows are brushed and filled in with light brown eyebrow shadow and angle brush. I like this technique though you could use a brow pencil.

Metallic Gold Crème Shadow is applied all over the eyelid.

Metallic Pink is applied on the outer eyelid crease, blending inward. MAC pink pigment is applied sparingly over the outer eyelid blending inward.

False Eyelashes are applied. MAC Fluidline and black is applied with an angle brush to the upper and lower lashline. Black Mascara is applied.

Crème blush is used under the cheekbone blending up toward the temples, using your finger tips.

Using a flesh-toned lip pencil, shape and fill the mouth following with an application of clear lipgloss.

This look can be done with any duo or trio of colors. Have fun and take pictures!

How to: Smoky Eyes and Big Waves with Jezlan Moyat

Some of the most obsessed-over looks are smoky eyes and big hair. Since the 70's women and teens can't seem to get enough of this ambiguous look. Whether with traditional smoky colors or getting risky with purples, pinks and greens – the smoky eye is a favorite for happy hour or late night rendezvous.

As a makeup artist and hairstylist it is a look I am asked to replicate often. Model Jezlan Moyat was posing for an album cover with Snow Design Studios. For this shoot, I chose big teased waves and smoky sultry eyes. I will take you step by step, describing how to reproduce this look at home and reference some of my favorite products.

My favorite shine spray is Bed Head Masterpiece Hairspray - it has tons of shine and it smells great!

A gentle hand and a lot of patience…

Begin by separating the 1" sections – Curl with hot curling iron or hot rollers and pin the curls into place.

Mist the rollers with a flexible hairspray and allow to set.

Once the curls have set, carefully remove the rollers or pin.

Tease the hair, lifting 90 degrees from the scalp to achieve the most volume.

Gently tease the hair from nape to crown and following through to the hairline. Remember you are teasing only at the root – be careful not to disturb the curl of the hair.

Gently loosen and smooth the curls with your hands. Finish with the Shine Finishing Spray.

Always start with a clean face and moisturized skin.

Most women need only concealer the same shade or as in this case a shade lighter blended under the eye and throughout the T-Zone.

Blend translucent powder all over the face.

Eyebrows are trimmed and filled in with a dark blonde/light brown color. You may choose to use a pencil but my preference is an angle brush and brow powder.

MAC Gleam is applied all over the lid.

MAC Carbon is used in the outer crease of the eyelid and blended well.

MAC Silver Ring is used lightly in the center crease of the eyelid, blending gently. Also the lower outer rim of the eyelid is blended with MAC Silver Ring.

MAC Fluidline is applied in a wide line at the lash line. Curl lashes and apply a thick coat of black mascara to both top and bottom lashes.

Apply pink blush powder along cheek bone blending into the apples of the cheek.

Use flesh toned lip pencil to outline and define the mouth. Apply lip gloss and blend any lines.

Makeup Q&A: Makeup for Blue Eyes

There is a distinct advantage of being able to select from almost any shade in the color spectrum but warm colors are the best for making those baby blues sparkle.

EYE SHADOW

A favorite natural look is to apply peach or warm pink all over your lids, using a slightly darker tone to contour and creamy beige as a highlighter. MAC's Shroom is an industry favorite. Other colors that are made for blue are gold, violet, taupe and grey.

Many makeup artists have said to avoid blues, and I am not much of a fan of blue shadow on anyone, however experimenting with navy blue adds a soft emphasis without screaming 80's glam.

When experimenting with the smoky eye, try silver and gray with a darker contour; however be careful not to go too dark. If you're brave enough for black shadow, start by making a small sideways V in the outer crease of your eye, blending inward. Follow with black liner and two coats of black mascara.

LINER & MASCARA

Blue eyes are not limited to any color liner or mascara and this is one time I love blue for you. Purple and white can also be fun alternatives. Black will add major drama but brown looks best with any look.

Apply mascara to lower lashes first to avoid getting mascara all over your lid when looking up. Always apply at least 2 coats.

DECISIONS...DECISIONS...

When standing at the makeup counter, one can feel lost as to what can look best for you. Fair skin, light blonde hair and lashes are best paired with lighter colors and brown liner and mascara. Darker hair and lashes can experiment a little more with the color wheel.

Makeup Q&A: Makeup for Green Eyes

Green eye girls want to know what will make their eyes sparkle. Besides a little white wine, think champagne, chocolate, plums and apricots.

EYE SHADOW

For a natural look, apply peach to the eyelid using taupe to contour and apricot as a highlighter. When selecting eye shadow, the sky is the limit but try to keep to warm colors as they are complimentary to green eyes. Bronze and copper are great colors for a fun night out.

There are not many rules when it comes to makeup, beside don't put lipstick on your (though chapstick makes a great primer). However I think blue does not do green eyes any justice.

When experimenting with the smoky eye, try gold with chocolate brown. Keeping the colors warm but using the same technique will achieve a stunning look for green eyes.

LINER & MASCARA

I have heard many makeup artists say green eyes stay away from black, but never underestimate the power of a little black liner. Also try steel gray or chocolate brown. Gold and white are fun liners to experiment with. Brown liner and mascara are great for most looks.

Apply mascara to lower lashes first to avoid getting mascara all over your lid when looking up. Always apply at least 2 coats.

DECISIONS...DECISIONS...

Like brown eyes, these emeralds have many options as to colors to play with. Try everything but things to consider are: skin tone and the darkness of your green. You do not want to overpower light skin and light eyes with dark colors, and darker tones work best with warm, deep colors such as plum.

Makeup Q&A: Makeup for Brown Eyes

Brown eyed girls are truly lucky for they can handle any color from pastels to bold. With or without eyeliner, the opportunities are endless.

EYE SHADOW

I love natural colors to intensify brown eyes. Taupes and peaches are great colors for soft romantic looks and in summer time. Violet blues and berry colors spice up any look. To achieve a more intense color use a cream eye shadow as a base, following with a powder eye shadow to set. Apply layers for longer lasting make up.

For more fun looks you can line eyes in fun colors. Pastels and frosted colors are fun in spring and winter, but I love bold aquas and violets any time! The contrast really makes brown eyes pop!

Brown eyes also pair nicely with the coveted smoky look and again are not limited to traditional colors!

LINER & MASCARA

The purpose of eyeliner and mascara is to define the eyes and extend the lashes, but for more delicate looks black can be too harsh. Try brown eyeliner, paired with brown mascara, to make your eyes glow. However, you are not limited! White eyeliner will make your eyes look bigger and experimenting with bright colors is an easy way to draw attention to your eyes.

Apply mascara to lower lashes first to avoid getting mascara all over your lid when looking up. Always apply at least 2 coats.

DECISIONS…DECISIONS…

It can be quite difficult to choose with all of the options available to brown eyes. Start with the basics for a natural look. Lighter hair and eyelashes work great with brown mascara and navy blue makes a great contour color for those with darker manes. Pink eyes with a darker crease (think violet) always make brown eyes sparkle. To pump up the drama pick shades that sharply contrasts each other. Greens, champagnes and bronzes give more emphasis to your skin tone – perfect for your summer tan!
